Snuff Mills is a stunning walk along a river surrounded by woods. Starting at the car park, which is free (till December 2021) but quickly gets busy, you can walk along the river (towards Frenchay) to Oldbury Court where there is a child’s play area and large open field for your dog to run around. Or you can walk along the river towards the city centre. It is the perfect place for any dogs that like water as there are lots of opportunities for your pooch to jump into the shallow river – there are usually lots of other dogs to splash around with.
Starting at the car park, you walk through a little hamlet with a few houses and past the historic mill. The mill itself has an interesting history and a worker from the mill “Snuffy Jack” gave ‘Snuff Mills’ its name. His ghost is said to still roam the area at night. You can see some pictures of the mill below although it’s no longer working.
If you and your pooch like long walks, we recommend the Eastville Park to Oldbury Court Estate walk (circa 5 miles)that passes through Snuff Mills along the river Frome.

There is a small tuck shop selling drinks and snacks at the entrance to the car park. For a more substantial meal, the dog-friendly Mason Arms pub in Stapleton is a short distance from Snuff Mills and boasts a great beer garden.

Wait…did I see Sash almost in the water? I mean she’s balancing on a rock surrounded by water but close enough! That looks like such a neat mix of wilderness and history. A ghost picture would have just been the icing on the cake.
